Though ice cream sandwiches and frozen yogurt may be the newest dairy fads in the dessert world, Milk in Beverly Hills is bucking the trend with its combination of home-made ice cream sandwiches, sorbet, malts and paninis.
Milk boasts a decadent selection of flavors such as banana dulce de leche, hazelnut crunch and Thai tea. Even better, customers can use any of these flavors to craft their own ice cream sandwich with Milk’s famous soft and gooey cookies, made in-house. A rich combination is the hazelnut crunch ice cream with double-chocolate cookies—this treat, however, will not leave room for any other consumption the rest of the night.
The shakes and malts, ranging from $6-$7, vary from a classic triple-chocolate shake to the intricate banana-peanut malt. Made with banana dulce de leche ice cream, malted milk and roasted peanuts, the latter drink is not to be missed.
Though considered a tourist destination by many locals, what makes Milk unique is its unconventional approach to dessert. Local chains such as Sprinkles, Diddy Riese, Coolhaus and The Pie Hole market themselves by boasting only one or two products: “World famous ice cream sandwiches and cookies” or “The best coffee and homemade sweet and savory pies.” While somewhat effective, this marketing strategy leaves the customer dissatisfied if she or he does not like the token item on the menu and has nothing else to sample.
Milk, on the other hand, has numerous delicious items both sweet and savory. For those wary of sugar, hot paninis such as the Vegetarian (crisp zucchini, fresh tomatoes, eggplant, arugula, goat cheese and walnut-red pepper sauce) and the Roast Beef (sauteed mushrooms, Swiss cheese, arugula and horseradish sour cream) will satisfy any palate.
Amazingly, everything on the menu is under $13, an anomaly for any type of dining establishment in the Beverly Hills area. The sumptuous variety and reasonable prices make Milk worth the trek.
