Having been in law enforcement and campus safety environments for more than 25 years, I can say with certainty that unarmed security is no security at all. It is a concierge service (i.e. car lockouts, escorts, door unlocks). Incidents that occur in today’s environment happen rapidly and with little warning. The response necessary to mitigate those kinds of rapidly evolving deadly threats cannot be accomplished by unarmed security officers. Remember, the reality is that any police that may respond will be several minutes to arrival. Those precious minutes means lives lost.

Well trained, well-qualified, and professional armed security is a step towards providing a safe environment for students. Arguing about whether or not to wear a bullet “resistant” vest inside or out of a uniform is idiotic.
