Editorial: Identity ought to be Self-Decided

    You seem to understand that “they” can be ambiguous and clumsy. Your promotion of its use is to champion unclear writing. You believe that avoiding oppression is the greater evil. So why not forego pronouns altogether, unless their use is inoffensive?

    Instead of “Sally ate their lunch,” which sounds illiterate to me, and is vague about whose lunch Sally ate, we could say, “Sally ate Sally’s lunch.” Cumbersome, I know. but in the service of avoiding the oppression of the gender binary, sacrifices must be made.
