In the final game of the three game series against Chapman University Saturday, outfielder and pitcher Devon DeRaad (junior) went 2 for 3 with a home run, two RBIs and three runs scored in the team’s commanding 14–4 victory.
“Our team finally believed that we deserved to be on the field with a team like Chapman in the third game of the weekend,” DeRaad said via email. “We have a lot of young guys, and right now we aren’t getting that confident play until after we break out and take a big lead. Our key going forward is going to be finding true self-belief and not backing down from competition with bigger, more physical teams around the conference if we want a chance to go to the tournament this year.”

LIzzy Kosin (senior) set a school record of 4:39.54 in the 400-meter individual medley Saturday at the SCIAC Championships. Needing to drop almost two seconds to break the record, Kosin swam the first 100 meters a second faster than her race earlier that morning and continued to gain speed throughout the race to finish sixth overall. On Friday, her 800-meter free relay finished only .36 seconds away from breaking another school record.
“Truthfully, I just wanted to go out and swim fast,” Kosin said via email. “It is an amazing feeling to know that you have your whole team on both sides of the pool ready to cheer for you. I wanted to make them as proud as I was and am of all of them.”
